{"id":93,"date":"2024-12-05T19:13:28","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T19:13:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fcasocal.org\/?page_id=93"},"modified":"2024-12-05T19:13:29","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T19:13:29","slug":"description-of-the-process-of-promession","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/fcasocal.org\/promession.html","title":{"rendered":"Description of the process of promession"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Promession is an innovative method of ecological burial. &nbsp;Its primary principles are preservation after death in organic form, and shallow burial in living soil that quickly converts a body to a form that is primed to foster new life. &nbsp;Promession is a natural, practical, and some may even say a beautiful approach because of its focused intent to foster new life from death. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Susanne Wiigh-Masak, a Swedish biologist, spent over 20 years on the concept before making it public. &nbsp;Susanne is an extraordinary woman with the brilliant mind of a scientist and the imagination of an artist. &nbsp;The idea of promession came to her as she gained expertise and understanding of the soil she was working with in her gardening business. &nbsp;She wondered how it would be possible to use human remains to create soil that was primed to foster new life, essentially, creating life out of death. &nbsp;While this concept can be observed in nature on a continual basis, it is a concept that may seem foreign and perhaps a bit uncomfortable when applied to the death of a human. &nbsp;But, why is that? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process is described by Susanne as gentle and environmentally-friendly, especially in comparison to the process of cremation (which requires fire, fumes, etc.). &nbsp;The result is a product that is transformed into an organic, hygienic soil in about 6-12 months that can then act as a nutrient for new plants as a living memorial for family and friends. &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The process of promession is simple and straightforward: &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The body is frozen to -18 \u00b0 C and is then placed into liquid nitrogen to make the body more brittle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The body is then vibrated, which causes it to break down into an organic powder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The body is then placed into a vacuum chamber to evaporate all liquid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The resulting dry powder passes through a metal separator where any metals and mercury are removed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The remains are now ready to be laid in a biodegradable coffin, which is buried in the living topsoil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The coffin and its contents become compost in about 6-12 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A bush or tree can be planted above the coffin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The compost can be taken up by the bush or tree,\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The plant stands as a symbol of the deceased.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We talked with Susanne recently about the progress that is being made to make promession available in the US. &nbsp;Currently, she is working with a few select people in the US to define regulatory barriers and other considerations. &nbsp;We will keep you posted on their progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">If you are interested in having promession available in the future, please register at <a href=\"https:\/\/fcasocal.org\/promession.html#\">Prolifera<\/a>, a non-profit organization. &nbsp;When you register with Prolifera you are simply expressing your interest for Promession in an effort to build advocacy to make this option available. &nbsp;We will keep you updated on the progress and availability in the US. &nbsp;Progress has taken place in Europe and several countries are finalizing the legislative changes needed to make Promession available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"113\" height=\"163\" src=\"https:\/\/fcasocal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/9011585.png\" alt=\"Mary Roach\" class=\"wp-image-94\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Mary Roach writes about Susanne and Promession in her NY Times Bestseller <em>Stiff:The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers<\/em>. \u00a0<a href=\"\/pdf\/stiff_chapter_11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here<\/a> to read the entertaining and informative chapter titled &#8220;Out of the Fire, into the Compost Bin,&#8221; describing Mary&#8217;s research into the process of Promession. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>STIFF: THE CURIOUS LIVES OF HUMAN CADAVERS.
